Looking please for suggestions. I want two roses to cover an ugly 6ft fence. Faces due west but in the shade of the house for some of the day. Repeat flowering and fragrant are essential  Doesn't matter if they grow huge as there are wires in place along that fence where somebody has grown fruit of some kind in the past. Got to start this mess of a garden soon!

Hi fumanchu..you don't say what colours you prefer, but good combinations could be Gloire de Dijon and Leverkusen (yellow/apricot) or Constance Spry and Mme Alfred Carrière (pink/white). The David Austin site is very good for info on all roses, not just their own production :)

Not fussy on colours really, anything will be better than that bloody fence  I just need to make a start, sick of looking out the back windows onto that disaster area. I love the look of the apricot one especially, and I think I have to have the Carriere.:spinning: ty!

Well, it's also better to have repeat flowering roses and if they have a scent all the better.

If I was going to put just one more climbing rose in my rose garden, it would not be any of those mentioned so far, but one called ZÉPHIRINE DROUHIN. Repeat flowering, and strongly scented.

I want repeat flowering and scented yes, but the colour isn't just as important. Will go and look at Zephirine , thank you.
Is it best to stick to DA or would Ebay be the ok to buy from?

I have, I think, around 21, climbing roses here and there in the garden, at least 12 of which are on the West bank of the Wildlife pond, so they're all in different facing directions. At the moment, David Austin has withdrawn it''s Roses from it's distributors and none of it's roses in pots are available although you can get some of their bare root roses.
I have and like Rose "Creme de la Creme"

It is a really good Rose, repeat flowering and scented and it's planted at the front of my Lilac "Madame Lemoine" and is climbing through it.

I love roses - the husband puts me off getting them because he says they always get diseased. They did in the last garden but they still looked ok. But I'm going to have more here anyway.

I have a fair mix of Shrub Roses and Climbing Roses, both modern and so called "old fashioned" Roses and, it's true, some of the "old fashioned" Roses do suffer from Black Spot, Rust, etc, but so what?, their vigour, number and beauty of their flowers and scent are unbeatable so they're always forgiven. But early treatment of the fungal diseases always seem to keep them looking fine and dandy.:love30::thumbsup:

But unfortunately, a martyr to blackspot and mildew. It's such a shame, because she's thornless too, so a lot less painful to train on a fence!

First things first, fumanchu! You'll need some support on the fence to tie your roses into. If you choose climbers with 'rambler' blood in their lineage, you'll have long stems that you can arch over and tie in. They'll then give you flowers all along the stem. Stiff-stemmed roses like 'Compassion' are a bit more tricky, as you need to fan the stems out, then tie them to the support.
At it's most basic, a few 3" screws with heavy-duty wire stretched between them at 12" intervals will give you plenty of scope :)
