i want to plant up a small border which is currently full of hebes and other poor plants, also a camelia which has been severel pruned to give it a rather square outline. the soil is acid loam, faces west, semi coastal, there are very few plants in the garden apart from azalea and rhodies, i am looking for flowers june, july, some interest all year round, preferably evergreen, no more than 80 cm high
    any answers?

Not evergreen but rudbeckia would fit the bill for height and colour. Annual or perennial varieties - take your pick. A plant I'm experimenting with this year is Ranuculus, Persian buttercup. Planted some bulbs (corms?) a few weeks ago and they've just come through.

Edit: You could also try one of the prostrate ceanothus eg. 'Blue Mound' which should do well providing its a bit sheltered from blasting winds in winter

frogesque _ I am interested in your Ranunculus, I had a go with them several years ago but lost them, I am not sure how hardy they are, it could have been cold mixed with wet, but if your survive then mine should further south.

LG my garden is probably at its most colourful June July, but I tend to use evcergreens as anchor plants rather then flowering plants for colour. I will think about your problem as I look round my garden today - as yet too early to get my brain wporking!

Have you thought of Heather(CALLUNA VULGARIS)it needs acid soil grows only to around 50cm with the same spread is in the shops now and is ideal for coastal gardens it will flower from midsummer right through until late autumn you could also plant some Erica which is really the same as heather except it flowers from around christmas right through until the middle of spring and Erica require the same soil and aspects as heather and would also go well with the shrubs you already have.
