I have a new piece of software which requires to know the Com port the device (my car OBD2 connector) is connected to. My laptop has three USB ports.
I have looked at Device Manager and it doesn't have a Ports menu item, only Universal Serial Bus controllers menu item. Opening that was no help.
Will it just be a case of trying Com 1, 2, 3 and 4 to see if something works or is there a more scientific approach to my problem?

Com port always used to mean the serial port(s) that connected your pc to a printer or old fashioned terminal. Maybe the meaning has changed over the years, have you looked for a D type connector on your laptop?. I know my pc still has them although I haven't used them in years.

The cable for attaching the laptop to the car's OBD2 port is a USB to OBD cable.
And no, there is no serial port on the laptop.

Normally you just stick the USB cable in and the software finds it automatically. I suppose your only option is to work through them.

Certainly looks like that is what I will need to do.
