Don't grow it from seed Lorea, it is a very prolific self-seeder. Get some root cuttings of the "Bocking 14" variety, which is sterile so won't take over your garden :dbgrtmb:

The problem is John I haven't seen it anywhere around here, perhaps because it's too hot and dry in the summer? In that case, would it grow anyway?

Any allotments near you? There are normally several people growing it there and I would expect someone who be happy for you to have a few roots. It roots incredibly easily from bits of root. I'm definitely with JWK though - you don't want the bog standard type, it will self seed everywhere and be a darned nuisance.

OK, skip the bit about "allotments near you" I've just seen that you are in Spain ... that may make it a bit more difficult to obtain.

Its probably a bit early in the year to be buying it, I'm sure loads will be available on ebay in a month or two's time.

Failing that this Organic Supplies shop would be a good source (their site says not available until May 2013):

I ordered mine from there a few years ago. Can't complain, it arrived at the right time for planting and all the pieces were good healthy pieces which all grew ok. Trouble is I planted half mine in the wrong place and lost quite a few as a result.

Ah Sorry, didn't see you are in Spain. I'm not sure whether it will grow in hot and dry, it is quite a tough plant so my guess is it will be OK. What are you growing it for? I grow it to make compost, maybe you want it for medicinal use?, I understand the normal type is better for that (i.e. the one you do grow from seed).

Hello again John. Yes I'm in the north of Spain where it is cold and wet in the winter but very dry and hot in the summer. I want it mainly for use as fertilizer, although I may also use it medicinally. My mother used to pick it growing wild and use it for sprains and bruises when we were kids.

I've got some root cuttings to get rid of if you still need any. You just stick the root cuttings in the ground and they will produce new growth really quickly.

All I ask is that postage is paid for them as our postal rate has shot through the roof recently.

That's a kind offer Jane, but I think I'll investigate further and see if I can find any over here, perhaps up near the coast where it tends to be a bit cooler and damper in summer. But thanks anyway! :dbgrtmb:
