I have a plot that hasn't been used for probably over 10 years, I've spent 2 years clearing it of weeds and have just started planting. I'm having trouble growing rocket and my experienced neighbour advised digging in compost which she kindly gave me, trouble is in the parts I've dug in the compost it's sprouting grass quite rapidly which is disheartening ! I wondered if anyone could advise me on the best time to dig compost in and how to tell if your plot needs it ? Thanks in advance !:thumb:

Hi Fretters. Don't dig the compost in. Apply as a thick mulch in winter. It will stifle any weed growth below it and if anything grows out of the compost it's easier to remove. Come planting time you can just plant through the compost layer. As for digging it in, the worms will be happy to do that for you.

Consider raised beds - no further digging required :thumb:

    Hi Fretters.
I can't stop rocket from growing in the garden!
Last year I paid no attention to the yellow-flowered seed heads on the rocket plants , and what they were doing. This year i've had to dig up and throw away huge amounts, because they self-seeded almost everywhere.....

If you like rocket, try american land cress too - it's winter hardy ( well hardier) and can be washed without going all manky. It self-seeds too :)

    cheers,
    Dave
