I have just purchased a compost bin, would it be better to put slugs & snails in to help break down the waste or not put them in.
The man in the garden centre said it is best if the bottom is left open and break the soil up under it, is he right???

    Thanks in advance

Rather than slugs and snails (although you will get them) you really want to encourage worms into your bin. Eventually they will colonise it and lightly breaking the ground will help but you can buy compost worms (red wriggler worms, not the normal earth worm) that will do the work of turning all that mush into something you can use in your garden. If you don't have your heap in contact with the ground then it's pretty well essential to start it off with bought worms.

    hi davidguy,
you will also need to put some water in the top of the bin (if it has a lid) every week or so
