    Hello

This is my first post :sofa:

I am going to grow my first strawberries this year, in pots, but after looking on the internet for compost, i have noticed that none of them state what ph they are

I want a compost that is between ph 5.5 and 6.5, does any one know of a particular compost which is within this range?

I would really appreciate your help,

    Thankyou,

    Michelle xx

    Welcome to GC :)

I don't think you need compost with a pH less than 7 for Strawberries, so if its just for Strawberries then I use regular Multi-purpose Compost (I use the tower pots so I can have several plants in a small space).

If you need "acid" pH compost then look for the word "Ericaceous" on the packet. "Ericaceous" plants include things like Heathers and Azaleas which need an "acid" compost.

    Google search: http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=ericaceous+compost

I use John Innes #3 which has a neutral ph but have never grown strawberries.... and I also add well rotted farmyard manure and a handful of bone/fish/blood fertilizer to the mix, so not sure if that alters the ph level

here is more info on the John Innes range:

      About John Innes

some garden centres do not stock the John innes name brand, but do stock others such as levingtons which state on the bag that they have been formulated to the John Innes recipes

John Innes also have an JOHN INNES ERICACEOUS COMPOST .... see the link:

      John Innes Ericaceous Compost

I bought several bags of compost today at our local garden centre .... they have an open bag of each compost so that you can see what you are buying .... I still opted for the John Innes #3 after checking them all

there was another one in a black bag that looked very good (I cannot remember the name though and was the same price ... 3 bags for a tenner)
