Can someone please tell me....is it ok to put - for example - broad bean plants which are covered in blackfly in the compost bin or should they be burned?

Burn. Strictly speaking you can compost but increased risk of infestation from eggs etc should you leave in compost for use next year

Spose it depends what composting your doing. Im guessing they would get killed if you are hot composting because of the temperature being up to 60c so i know fly eggs and flies get killed in that according to the Hotbin website
