I have in the past read many topics about compost bins and finally today i can say my 330l plastic bin has produced some pukka compost, I had added some grass last week so I thought I would mix it in a bit as there had been alot of hot weather here, and to my joy, underneath was some lovely black compost. Ok it has been slow, I started it at the end of last summer, generally I have added a few grass buckets, shredded paper, vegetable peelings when I remember as it is so easy to just put them in the waste disposal I forget and old bedding plants and dead heads etc. I am now going on my council web site to order another as I think someone suggested to have two running, they are after all only £6 inc postage here, so I may have to wait, but oh I was so excited to see my compost today, guess this is the only place I could write this and someone wont advise me to "get a life". Thought I would post this to give hope to any other newish gardeners that are trying this and are maybe giving up hope as I was starting to do.

    Hi sharon

    Congrats on your compost [IMG]

It is surprising how long it takes to compost down isn't it?

I have two bins on the go, and the way I work it is to fill one up completely, then leave it to compost down, then start to fill up the second one.

This year I didn't think it had amounted to much untill I started to spread it around and was pleasantly surprised to discover loads of lovely usable compost!!

    Very sad I know.

Forget the waste disposal Sharon! Get the stuff in the compost bins. Why throw it away when you can use it to make things grow better? ;)

We've two bins and two heaps and really get a kick out of what we return to the soil.

Get an even bigger kick out of what we take out of it though. :D
