I have a fair old amount of compost sitting in my shed and a garden full of seeds from weeds I've pulled out. Is it a silly idea to spread a moderate layer of compost over the top of my border to prevent the seeds from getting any sunlight? Or would they benefit from the nutrients instead?

Depends what the weeds were, some will not germinate if the light is excluded, others will.

Probably best to use the compost as a mulch, then scrape aside & dig up those that do, dandelions, docks, bindweed etc.

I use whatever I can as a mulch, it does help to keep ahead of weeding in the summer.
