A very unlucky chap there. Given the thousands of compost bags sold country wide I view it as an unfortunate fluke but as a precaution I have issued the cat with a dust mask and injected essence of catnip into the unopened bags ;)

As usual, some good advice on the web e.g. http://www.health.sa.gov.au/PEHS/Youve-got-what/ygw-legionella-longbeachae.pdf

Legionella is common in water and soil and most of the time, doesn't hurt anybody. This poor chap had the misfortune to get infected by a rare strain. The key health warnings seem to be 1) avoid breathing dust from bagged compost and 2) wash your hands carefully before eating or drinking.

    Very useful post.
