When composting try NOT to follow my example! My compost looked and smelled lovely, it had been in the compost heap for 2 years. I liberally spread it all over my raised beds and I must admit I'm getting good results from it.... BUT, My compost heap obviously didn't reach a high enough temperature to kill off dormant seed because now I have tomato plants springing up all over the place and I haven't a clue what varieties! At least tomato plants are easy to weed out but I've left a few "just to see"

Vince, you are right to worry about the heat. If managed properly a 1m x 1m compost heap will be ready in 6 months.:thumb:

If you add fresh manure the heat is amazing and wonderful compost results in afew weeks. I never compost weeds though....just in case

having had to put up with the rats knawring thru 2inch boards to rummage thru me compost heap, i'm now resorting to anerobic decomposition by putting it all in a barrel full of water. Don't think anything is going to survive that. Just wish i had a compressor & gas bottle storage set up, maybe next year.:mswhl:
