I wish to sow or plant lavandula angustifolia in a loam soil of about 7 pH. What would be some good ingredientsto add to this soil for composting, in order that the lavandula may thrive? Thanks.

Make sure the drainage is good Simon, as lavender hates to have wet feet. I planted 150 plants in our local heavy clay but added grit to the planting holes and they're thriving. They're not particularly hungry feeders as they come from the Med and are used to dry, fairly barren soil so don't overfeed, perhaps just topdress.

Lav is my all time fave plant. I grow tons of it and i just leave it alone and cut it back in spring which produces more. In my experience I always plant it alongside mint and Rosemary as they seem to feed off each other and im no expert but am told im very green fingered.
The only Lav i cant stand in Butterfly lavender. It has beautiful flowers but stinks vile.
I kept a huge plant a few years ago that spread but sadly died off. I think they have about a 3 year lifespan depending on the weather and where you plant it.
Angustifolia produces some amazing flowers or stems and I just keep cutting it off before it flowers for the house and linen bags that i make. Rosemary was used and still is in some French hospitals for its antibacterial properties.
Lavender grows fine in pots but after a year needs to be put in the ground. I would certainly recommend that you grow it alongside mint and rosemary though as they all seem to thrive together and the smell is beautiful.
