If I want to compost nettles - is there a particular way to do it without them taking root? As long as no part of the root or seeds go in, I'll be fine?

    Hi rogwan:)
I've been cutting nettles(check for wild life first) when they are in their prime,so to speak, and adding them to my heaps for yonks with no problems. I also put a small amount into my water butts which creates a nice liquor and not too strong.

Hi Rogwan & welcome to the forums.

Like Paladin says, shouldn't be a problem. I do similar with regard to making liquid feed, not just with nettle roots but any roots that you don't want in the compost heap, couch grass, bindweed etc. If they rot anerobically in a bucket of water then you use the diluted water as a feed, (smells like a dead badger) and at the end of the season tip out the sludge at the bottom and dig it back in.

I shove the leaves in ex-onion sacks and hang them old cold water stotage cisterns.

Best to avoid pouring around plants that you're picking from (like leaf beet) as the smell is rather offputting. The remains get used as mulch.

It's really good, cheap stuff. Don't be put off making it by the smell or any rat-tailed maggots you get in it.
