Definitely not a gardening question but please can anybody help:

I am trying to save my email folder onto a disc but it keeps coming up 'an error initialising MAPI'.

I have tried 'Asking Jeeves' etc but haven't found anything that would help. Reason I want to do this is that I think my pc will have to be cleared and then set up again - that's not technical explanation - but you know what I mean?

Welcome to the board - you're doing just fine! Just wade in on any topics you are interested in.

Sorry can't help you. Outlook Express was so awful and full of security holes I junked it ages ago. I now use Yahoo which I can access from any PC that has web access as it's stored on a remote host. I did do a quick Yahoo search on the web and there are message boards reporting on your problem. I can't vouch for it but have a read of this message board thread It may help.

Unless you have very little data on your pc I would only do a drive format and clean install if you have tried everything else first. Run good anti spyware , firewall and anti virus programs. (Microsoft anti spy although a bit of a nag is surprisingly good and very effective although I also have SpywareBlaster as well; Zone Alarm and AVG do the rest ) Pay a visit to 'Trend' Housecall as well to give it a dose of salts.

CCleaner (with a double 'C') will clear out a whole load of junk, including temp files. (I run with cookies unchecked otherwise it also rips out stored passwords) Finally I have my PC set so that cookies are only intalled after asking first and my default response is no!

Once you have all the rubbish out of your system you can then do a defrag on your hard drive(s) You'll be amazed the difference doing all that makes.

    This may help..or not [IMG]

    Regarding that MAPI error:
    MAPI (Messaging Application
Programming Interface),allows programmes to work together to distribute mail.

Sounds like it`s trying to export the file(s) to another pc that isn`t there, rather than copying it over to cd/floppy as a backup?

    Frankie,
As you`ve managed to find the forum and post a message,i`d say you`re doing fine [IMG]

    [IMG] jjordii,
emails are encrypted. Try doing a copy & paste of each email you want to save, into word. Save it, then create a folder for them & burn your disc as normal collecting emails from your folder.... Or the folder... There that help????????????????????????????? Marley ;) Give me a shout if you like...

Thankyou all so much. I have tried lots of things without success so hoping one of the above suggestions will work. Main reason I think I might have to clear the whole system is that the computer keeps switching itself off every 5 mins or so - very frustrating! :(

    [IMG] Hi jjordii,
that sounds like a power supply problem & not the supply to your house....... :D :D :D The internal stabilized power supply in your pc... ;) Will it let you copy & paste your important emails???

Could be a dusty (aka caked up) cpu heatsink which would cause the cpu to overheat and shutdown the pc.

You could try removing the fan (4 screws) and cleaning the heatsink with a dry "unused" paintbrush ;)

No need to remove the heatsink from the cpu.

    Ah!
One other problem you might have is the processer heat sink and fan are gunked up with dust and lint causing it to overheat. Unplug from the mains and take the side off your PC and give the processsor a bit of a blow out and clean with a soft brush. Don't be tempted to use a hoover hose as this can do a lot of damage with static discharge.

Edit: :D Hex beat me to it!

Thanks once again to all for these helpful suggestions. I don't know if I am confident enough to start removing screws and covers but sounds like it will need to be done. I try to sort problems out myself but think my friendly IT man down the road will have to be called in as I don't want to end up making things worse!
Will let you know how I get on.

Do also use a uptodate scanner there are some good free ones Adaware, Spybot, Housecall. If you have a piece of spyware or a virus it may eventually destroy your PC content. I run one regularly and all sorts of things come up and are removed. I use Yahoo mail and also, as mentioned above, clean my heatsink and fan every few months.
