if it is a nice tree you mite cut back all branches to a height of 6 feet, that can make it look more impressive and allow a bit more lite in

Not a powerful lot will grow close to conifer trunks - too dry and too shady. That said my neighbours conifers are bare at the base, and because there is no fence, light gets there. Ivy, and cotoneaster - sown by the birds is doing Ok, as is erica - its very dry, but the light is goodish

Hi, right at the back of my garden there is a big cypress type conifer, not a lot of light and very dry. It was so over grown that nobody had been up there for years, so the plants there have had to grow unassisted. There is ivy, and snowdrops, aconites [?yellow shiny petals, violet shaped leaves] and a bit further away, arum, bluebells and comfrey. I thought I would try more woodland bulbs, and some more ivy varieties.

I have tried woodland type bulbs in a similer position, which seam to grow for a couple of years and then I re-plant.
