In place of grow bags this year I'll be using pots for growing tomatoes, chillis, cucumbers, french beans and runner beans, courgettes and maybe a couple of others (basically I never got round to making the planned raised beds...)

Can anyone suggest appropriate pot sizes for me please? Toms, chillis and cucs will be in the greenhouse and all else outside if that makes any difference.

    Hi Loofah,

I would suggest pots between 3 & 4 litres in size and put one plant in each pot.

    Regards

Sorry TC, 3 to 4 litres is way too small.

Loofah, we had a similar discussion about this here :http://www.gardenerscorner.co.uk/forum/showthread.php/tomato-pot-sizes-20795.html?t=20795&highlight=pot+litres

I'm with pete on this, get the biggest pot you can - 12 inches (I'm unsure what that is in litres) for toms & cucs - maybe smaller for chillies (and 1 plant per pots). For runner beans and courgettes I would say even bigger than 12", but I've never tried so I'm guessing. The greenhouse pots will need a lot of watering thats why I would say get the biggest you can.

Summarising from that thread - I grew my Tomatoes and Cues in 11" / 10L pots last year. I think they were about right.

Chillies could be in smaller pots (although it depends ... some chilli plants are big, and some are quite small; the Demon Red I grew last year were small plants, and were happy in pots which were somewhere between 5" and 9").

Dunno about beans / courgettes though ...

Why not use grow bags loofah? Even if you don't use them as containers, they are quite a cheap source of compost.

Alternatively use grow bags but cut in half, stand each half on end, and you have two suitably sized containers - and compost!

That was the original plan but I just kinda fancied using pots this year for some reason... I may revert to the half grow bag technique though!

    Thanks all
