Well I'm stumped... but I think I'd settle on the Polygonaceae family maybe submitting it to the website below which is run by The Open University as part of The Opal Project, The site has a number of very active professional members from the Botanical Society of The British Isles (BSBI) and other similar organisations

iSpot | your place to share nature

although there might be some other members on here with some ideas! =]

I'm not sure either, plant looks knotweedy but the flowers aren't.

Well see that's what I thought and then I stumbled across a North American species Polygonum hydropiperoides (I'm not suggesting it's that) while googling which has simmilar shaped flowers so maybe the one pictured in the original post is just a bit stunted?

Its not convolulus, but I dont have a name for it.

It used to regularly come up in grow bags in the 70s, but never bothered to find out what it was.
Occasionally see it in the garden, these days, but its not something that becomes a problem.

Thank you all for your replies, and sorry it's taken me so long to reply myself!

As per Aesculus' suggestion I submitted the photos to iSpot last night and it's been identified as buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum). A spot of googling later and I certainly agree. Nice to have a good weed - I'll keep it and use it as green manure I think.

Thank you again for your ideas, and thanks for the website - I shall be using it again!

Interesting! I've seen this before and never bothered to identify it. You learn something every day....pity you forget most of it a few days later!

            Yes, you did get close!

I think I shall stick around and take a nosy through the rest of the forum. Looks like a lovely community here.

Unfortunately I tried to edit my first post and change the thread title to say it was buckwheat and not convolvulus... and now my first post seems to have disappeared altogether :( I think I should stick to the gardening and not go messing with technology!

Not odd at all - somehow the system "moderated" the post (that is, 'unapproved' it or made it invisible). What's odd is that usually if the OP is moderated then so is the thread!

Anyway, it's been approved now so you can see it.
