Visible as a romantic ruin from the M25 near Epping, Copped Hall is a fantastic mansion that caught fire in 1919. Since then it has been a ruin and its magnificent Italianate gardens http://www.coppedhalltrust.org.uk/history_victorian.html became a jungle. Now, volunteers have started to restore them and I went to an open day yesteday. Probably the statues and ornaments will never be found, but the weed sycamores have been cleared and the gardens are coming back again.

Formerly growing produce for the Hall, the four acre Walled Garden is set mainly to lawn and herbaceous beds. The extensive greenhouses are still awaiting restoration.
