Hi intermiplants. Welcome to GC. :D

It is having babies in all probability. Just let them grow then you can take them off, usually with a sharp knife once they have developed their own root system. You don't say what type of cordyline this is but there is a possibility that once the babies are established, mummy plant may die. Some do. Some don't. So if it does, don't worry, just keep the next generation.

I, personally dont see any reason why the main stem should die, but I think you would end up with a better shaped plant if the stem was kept single.
I have seen some nice looking cordys with multi stems but they take quite a while to become a real specimen plant and just look like a tangled bush for a good few years.
Is it possible that you have damaged either the roots or the lower part of the stem, underground, while digging around the plant.
That just might cause it to sucker in that way. [IMG]

no pete; it hasnt been damaged
think just on the odd plant it must do this i been
round a few garden cntrs and there are a lot with
2/3 stems i agree with you that they do look
nicer with one stem but it looks like it is out of my hands. gave it a gentle rock and looks like the stem is dying just above the babys. maybe it
stood in water too much in that rainy season we had. wait and see watch this space [IMG]

They appear to be a distance from the main stem, which is what led me to believe that when the soil around the plant was cultivated maybe a few roots were severed, causing them to grow new shoots.
Have you had a s****e around the base to determine that the new shoots are attached to the main stem?
