Went for a walk around Corfe Castle, what's left of it, as it's part of our local patch now. It was started about 1070 just after the Battle of Hastings. It was partly destroyed and rebuilt several times.

      Good photos Strongy.
I remember visiting there while on a family holiday in Dorset in 1998.
A very atmospheric and evocative place as I recall, I remember trying to explain the centuries of history behind the castle to my children at the time.
They, however, were much more interested in repeatedly running up the steep grass banks (ramparts?), and rolling back down again! :o

        Most Excellent Strongy:dbgrtmb:

I was working on the Church down the road from there, think it was called Corfe Mullen.

Used to go into Corfe to buy liquorice pipes to take home to the ziglets on a friday.

There has been a lot of restoration done recently and the scaffolding and netting has only recently been taken down.
The upper parts were surveyed with a camera mounted remote controlled plane.:)
How they built it nearly a thousand years ago takes some imagining.

Did you walk in from the village, or take the 'back route' from the car park at the Visitor Centre along the river, then the lane at the back of the castle into the village? (think there's some great chunks of castle fallen down to the bottom along that last bit of the route). Got some pics somewhere taken from the top with steam trains passing down below. Used to call in there a lot on the way back from Dorset holidays when my daughter was younger and enjoyed running up & down the slopes.

Thanks for the pics Strongy :dbgrtmb: A lovely corner of the country Corfe , I was last there in 1980 ! From memory the castle was finally destroyed in the civil war , and a Norman king was shot by arrow and killed . The village of Corfe has been used many times as a film and TV set . Now that area is the isle of Purbeck , was it actually an island once or a marshland island  I need to have a Wikipedia on this !

Not an island Harry. Just had a look on the map, it was Church Knowle where I was working. Had to re roof the Church using stone shingles & limewash the interior.

We used the porch as a tea hut, heard a chittering coming from behind the notice board.

Our chatting had woken up a bat, who wasn't too happy about being awake at 10 am.

        Great pics :dbgrtmb:

I love it around there. As kids my parents used to take us all to stay in a campsite called East Creech Farm, used to spends days at the farm, and the walks from the farm to the hill above. The walk takes you into Corfe Castle. Studland Bay, Swanage, Lulworth Cove all around there. Lovely place.

Been back a few time as an adult and took my kids. They loved the steam train :D

Wish i could live that way.
