Corks

    So, corks. I've just tried opening a bottle and the cork was stuck fast. It seemed almost glued to the bottle!

    is this a cheap cork issue (this was from wilkos) or something else perhaps?

      I've occasionally had it with cheaper bottles of plonk. There are two solutions which can be used together - run the top of the bottle under a very hot tap for a couple of minutes and then try to extract the cork; the heat makes the glass expand ever-so slightly and can take just enough pressure off to let the cork ease out; secondly, get a great girt long screw (100mm should about do it) and screw it into the cork - - grab onto the head of the screw with pliers or molegrips and then pull.

      Oh I got the cork out with a knife but I wondered if the cork was just crap so should buy some others

        Ah, not my area of expertise then, sorry. I know nothing about them going in or the quality of them - my area of interest lies in getting the blighters out :biggrin:

          Was the bottle standing upright?
          Just wondering if the cork had dried out, and the dried up wine in it had stuck it to the bottle.

            Wilko corks are Moo Poo! The only ones that don't fall apart (inserting and withdrawing) or leak (both air and wine) are the silicone coated reconstituted corks (they have 'Favourite' printed on the side) and require a 2 lever corker to insert.

            For short term use, re-use metal screw cap bottles which can be made to last a little longer by wrapping some cling film around the bottle thread before replacing the cap.

              the bottles have been stored up right for too long and they have dried out , as even on the sides for a few days they cant absorb the liquid.

              So I agree with Pete

              Bottles are all stored in racks so not drying out. they're obviously just rubbish! I'll get some of those Youngs ones
