I have just planted six bare-root dogwoods, and I have reduced them in size by half.

I thought it would be sensible to use these trimmings as cuttings and prepared a large pot and have stuck them all in around the edge. I put them in my little mini greenhouse and the buds on the trimmings are all opening.

It occured to me that instead of needing heat, they may need cool. Does anyone know where I should put them to give them the best chance?

I'd put them in a shady position somewhere outside - they would probably do better stuck in a slit trench in your soil if you have a suitable place, as they will take several months to root. :dbgrtmb:

    Thanks John,

Will transfer the pot to a shady bit near the hedge. That'll free up space in the greenhouses! Hmmm.... what shall I sow!

When is the best time to take dogwood cuttings as I've only previousy layered red dogwood, but I now have some black dogwood (Cornus alba Kesselringii) which (at the moment) seem to have longer, straighter stems which would be far more difficult to get back down to ground level. I'm hoping to use it in basket weaving.

    :happydance:

Scrungee, I was cutting back one of my Cornus (as you do at this time of the year) last week and decided to try a few of the cuttings in a pot, as I like this particular one and wouldn't mind another couple of them. I just shoved them into a pot of compost and watered. They have leaves on them now a week later...

Sounds good. My bare rooted plants cost less than a pound each and if I can get a few cuttings from each in the first year so much the better.

One year I used the "as-you-do" prunings from the dogwoods as Pea-sticks, and they had pretty much all rooted by the end of the Summer!

I put my trimmings into some pots in a coldframe and ..............

Only those taken from the tips of stems rooted, but maybe the others from lower down the stem would have if I'd covered them with a polythene bag.

I have produced new Dogwood plants by cutting a first year growth stem about 3' long, cleared about 15" of foliage and stuck in the ground.
They usually root and grow away.
It seems easier than starting with a small cutting
