Cornus dogwood

    Hi all

    Bought a red cornus dogwood today only �£3, can I plant it out now and will it grow very big?

    Hi Stingo. I don't see why you shouldn't plant it out. It can get big but the idea is to cut it back in early spring each year, or every other year if you prefer, to about 1ft or so to keep those lovely red stems young. In good soil they can grow 6ft in a year.
    The cut stems can be rooted easily to make new plants.
    They like moisture retentive soil that doesn't dry out in summer and do well in damp areas.

    hi there Stingo, I planted one last year and it's nothing to look at in summer, but at the moment it looks fantastic...lovely red stems certainly brighten the garden up. good luck with yours
