    Hi all,

I am new to this forum and new to the whole gardening role, so forgive me if i ask daft questions.

I am currently growing cos lettuce and i have sowed around 13 seeds of which they have all sprouted. They currently stand around 1cm high, so the question is, what height do i move them to there final location, or do i need to stagger the pots they goto before there final pot i.e seed tray - 8cm pot then 3 to a 15 litre pot(This is my intention)

Also another question if i may. I sowed another tray of lettece, but all of the seeds seemed to of sprouted, but they seem really really small in comparison.Have i overwatered?

    Hope this all makes sense

    Steve

Hi Steve & welcome to the forum.

Wait until the seedlings are about 2 to 3 inches tall and have started to develop their main leaves then transplant them in their final positions. They grow very quickly so theres no need to keep potting them into bigger and bigger pots.

Re your smaller seedlins, its likely that they are too crowded or possibly the compost is too wet and soggy. If they are packed in together you need to thin them out.

thanks for the reply, yes thats what i thought originally but wasnt sure. The soil is very soggy, so i will pull the majority of the seedlings out.

Whilst we are on topic, I will follow your advice about waiting until they are 2-3inches tall, then i will put them in a 15l bucket. How many lettece to a 15l pot should i do?

    Thanks

    Steve

If its bucket sized I would try and cram in around 8 plants, then pick some of them whilst they are small which will leave gaps for the remainder to grow bigger.

They dont like being moved, mine took ages to grow after being moved but the ones that i left grew really quickly. Leave the plants untill four proper size leaves have formed and they will do better. When you move them expect them to wilt over for about a week or so. Keep them netted too or the birds will get them, pigeons especially.
