    Hi John, PCMedic

Just a sort of general question as I seem to be glued to my pc at least 4 hours per day.

Have you got any idea (approximately) how much electricity I am using per hour! :D

Does that come under 'Computer Questions' - if not no probs - I will have to try

    hi.

all depends on the power your pc is running...all pc's have different power supplys in the back that give the pc enough or more than enough watts........

    i estimate a Intel p4 2.4ghz running a 400 watts power supply at about.........

    10 to 20 p an hour.

LOL isn't electricity cheaper where you live?
    Thought UK was most expensive.

Was pondering on whether it would be cheaper in the end to get Broadband as I do spend a lot of time waiting for things to download. I assume on BB it would be quicker and so spend less time on pc - but on second thoughts I'd probably browse on GC a lot more. :D

I think it might be a bit less than that PCMedic. 6 months ago I bought a consumption meter and posted some readings on :-

    http://www.gardenerscorner.co.uk/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=2;t=000092#000000

I have just attached my meter again, and its reading 152 when the hard disk is stationary and 163 when its running. That is made up of Sound 6 watts, Modem 5, Printer (on but not working) 4, Monitor 76, Main box 61, and Hard disk 13.

In total say 160 watts. I pay 10.11p per extra Kwh. So thats 1.6 pence per hour. My monitor is a cathode ray tube, if you had a flat screen it could be 40 or 50 watts less.

    Edit spelling 23:59

Hi, jjordie, just now read your message reading PeterS's. We are cheaper here but will have to calculate. We are on broadband but, like you say, I tend to browse GC from 9-10ish am till midnight. T'other half is in another room with his computer and neither of us log our unless we're going out somewhere so we're on BIG TIME!

Interesting, PeterS, your calculations sound more reasonable and t'other half agrees.

Why is that, MMD, is everything free on Sky?

By the way, how much does sky cost you?

We have TV and satellite free here, except for the movie side of things.

I "switch on" every morning 8.30 ish ...connect to the internet(ADSL) and leave it connected until late evening (unless I'm out for the day) ....I haven't noticed any startling increase in the electricity bill.....

LOL ...we have a satellite connection for one of our TV's (the other TV is purely for the French analogue channels) we have the 'free to air' programmes BBC 1 2 3 4, Radio etc.. which I suspect is what you have ? I REFUSE to subscribe to anything Richard Murdoch has a hand in, ie SKY !!.... we can get SKY news ..but the rest of their "Packages" are by subscription of varying amounts depending on what you want....

French TV is excellent, so we have a good mix !

    M-L

Morning M-L. Sounds like we work the same pattern with the computer and GC.

Also sounds similar about the TV except we get "free to air" as you say programmes on the same TV as the four Portuguese channels, which are excellent. On Sundays one of them runs three movies, basically at 2, 4 and 6 o'clock, all English with Portuguese sub-titles ... great for learning the language! We also get Sky news, Euro news and various others things, just not the movie / sports channels which don't interest us anyway.

Anyone without broadband should look at Bulldog. If you don't intend to download movies etc and need an unlimited download it is both cheapish and you can get fast speeds if your BT line carries them. I was going to swop from bt to this until Sky came upwith their free or, for unlimited downloads, £10 per month. So I am waiting for sky to get to this area. At the moment BT charge £28 a month. We have two computers running all the time and a laptop running WiFi. While you are surfing or on GC it is cheaper than going to the pub! and the company is better on GC
