We've had a lot of rain (as I'm sure others have too) and yes, the ground is still damp/bit soggy.

Had a couple of sunny days (including today) but not enough to make the ground totally dry.

    Problem is:
    a) rain stopped play in the mowing department, so didn't get the "final cut" done; b) the rain is making the grass grow and it is looking awful (!);
    c) if a final cut cannot be fitting in, the way things are going, it's going to be a near impossible job if I have to wait until Spring :cry3:

We have a petrol mower, so no concerns about water/electric, but, is it ok to mow at all? :noidea:

Thank you, for any and all advice.

      Hi Mum
There will be dry days, most of this week where I live.
Wait for a breezy day or two,go out early morning and knock off all the morning dew with a lawn rake,by lunch time should be ok.

Put on high cut as well , with the soil so wet will stop it from pulling it out and filling your lawn mower with soil etc , and quickly go over it dont take for ever its just too wet .

Thank you, roders and Spruce: much appreciated :)

As an aside: roders ... would the words: H'sien + Chomchoms mean anything to you? (worth a shot in the dark  )

As said above, if you have a dry-ish day you can give it a mow, however keep the blades nice and high as the grass needs access to as much sunlight as it can get at this time of year because the sun is low and weak. If it is wet though, or if your ground is sodden I would stay off it and just let it grow long.

There is also a lot of rust and leaf spot around at the moment, due to the wet ground having washed through all the nutrients, weakening the grass. So a quick mow will help to pull out infected leaves. (collect the clippings though!)

If you haven't done so already, I'd also recommend giving it a good feed, something high in P and K, to help it get through the winter.

          Kris

I mow mine all winter - not very often, and not when it is frosty or waterlogged :(, and with the blades higher up than during the summer, but I don't have a "final cut" as such.

I'm hoping to mow mine again later this week. At this time of year, I refer to it as "hoovering", as I'm picking up the fallen leaves as much as trimming the over-fertilised tumps (from dog-pee) . It always looks so good after a quick trim!

Just mowed mine today with the blades at their highest point.
Should be ok as only the tops of the grass is all that have been taken plus the leaves too. Now I have a lot of chopped up leaves to put down on the ground where the old bed was.

Just given my lawns the last mow / hoover of the year today. Took advantage of a fairly dry warmish week and raked all the dead leaves up , and gave them a high level mow , which has removed most of the other leaves. As Sian says it looks quite healthy now :dbgrtmb:

I've mowed each day for the last four days. It takes a lot longer than normal because of the leaves.

Well, Just to say the sun was out today and dried off the tall grass. So I got the mower out and gave the tops a clipping, set on the highest cut though.

Lucky you the whole of my garden is just too wet to do anything soil related so I just keep off or sneak around the edges

                          Sounds like mine, Spruce.

I've failed at training Ozzy to sneak around the edges and not to run/roll around in the quagmire formerly known as lawn. Goodness only knows if it will recover :wallbanging:
