I've been growing courgettes for the first time this year, from seed. They got off to a good start and have made really healthy plants, whicha re flowering quite prolifically now. However, I notice most of the flowers seem to be male ones, with very few actually courgettes forming. Is this usual? Should I be picking off the male flowers to allow the plants to concentrate energy on producing fruits?

Anthony: that sounds normal to me, I only ever get a few females vs loads of males. Don't bother picking off the males, I think the plant can only support a certain number of females at any time, you need to be picking them regulary to encourage the plant to produce more.

I thought the same but they are cropping well, you will probably only have two or three female ones at any one time however as you pick them more will appear.
