Courgettes anyone planted out yet

I was thinking of planting out side this week, slowly hardening them off outside during the day then back in the greenhouse at night , yawn yawn but it pays off in the longrun .But with all this rain and the wind I might leave ?? .

I put my 3 out last week all are carrying crops at the moment, but I'm a little worried as this rain is focast all next week aswell. Fingers crossed they will be ok though.

I foolishly planted some out a couple of weeks ago ! They are no more !!
I put a couple out in the veg plot 2 weeks ago still in their pots for a week, then planted them out last week. They seem okay so far. But yes, a strong wind and rain today for us. And an unsettled week so a lack of sunshine to come maybe ?
I have a couple in the greenhouse which are now in flower too.

Planted out yesterday. Hope they survive this rain. Never grown them before ... are they fragile or something ?

When they are young plants yes tend to flop/snap leaves with the wind and rain until they get bigger , plus they like the warmth/sun and just sulk and dont do nothing untill they get some

Potted mine out on Friday, plus four butternut squash. I grew these from seed from... a butternut squash we ate. I know they may not come true, but I though I'd give it a go. Plants looking good, despite the rain.

 

Get a 1200mm long strip of polythene with a width as high as the plants and staple both ends to a timber batten, leaving 150mm projecting. Push the batten into the ground and then push 2 short lengths of cane in to pull it out into a triangular windbreak around the plant.

If you've got a supply of 600mm wide (when flat) clear plastic sacks it much easier to cut some circular strips from it and hold them in place with 3 small canes. Old car tyres around plants also give protection from wind.

 

Do you get a lot of trouble with wind Scrungee?!

 

I leave the car tyres permanently in place around my marrow & pumpkin plants long after they've scrambled out of them as they hold down the mulch mats I grow them through. They also assist in keeping the rain off organic slug bait tucked inside the rim (in old jar lids as water settles in there) that's so easily damaged by rain.

 

Where can you get old car tyes from?

 

A tyre garage! It may help it it's not a national chain with proper policies on disposal of controlled waste. An independent source who pay loadsa money to get them taken away normally welcome folks who want to sake them disposal costs.

P.S. The really big tyres normally get recycled.

 

Trouble is, old tyres are blooming hard to get rid of once you've finished with them. Our tips won't take em anymore & when you scrap a car at the breakers they now insist you take 5 other tyres away with you to offset their costs of disposal
