Our courgette plants have been producing flowers and tiny courgettes for a few weeks now, but they never grow into proper sized courgettes. I know there can be male and female flowers, so maybe that's it, but when can I expect a proper crop?

Maybe the wet, miserable weather is slowing them down.

My courgette plants have been in the ground for weeks now and have barely moved, I have had one or two flowers is all. So yes, wet miserable weather is slowing them down as they need sunshine and warmth to flourish.

Thanks Steve. I don't know about your side of the penines but on our side the weather had a good blowout yesterday and now the sun is out, so fingers crossed.

Mine have a few tiny courgettes coming but already nearly all of the leaves are covered in mildew, this has never happened this early but there again we haven't had such a cool, cloudy season like this for years.:frown:

The male flowers tend to be longer than the female flowers and grow on long stems, usually from 3"-6" long. The females grow on very short stems, thicker, stems. At this time of year you usually get a lot of male flowers only but the females should be starting very soon - they have the fruit on them. Once they've got going they'll produce more very quickly.

They're not too keen on cooler weather so are likely to have been slow. It's amazing how quickly they can catch up if it warms up a bit.

No, they need polinating, in fact it helps to take one & strip the petals then rodger the femail flowers, just in case Spruce is using all the bees.
