Courgettes

This is the second year I have grown them, and according to a lot of people there are very easy to grow, I don't find them so, as the blooms fall off, and I end with with nothing, what am I doing wrong, I grew them last year in the greenhouse, this year outside. Help!

 

Hi Bumblebee, This is my second year in allotment gardening and have grown green courgettes and now yellow corgettes.

pic was taken last week my green and yellow courgettes. Notice some of the plant leaves are yellow and green they are the yellow courgettes.





I have no problems with them . They need plenty of rich manure farm or chicken manure. This year I used chicken manure.

 

I must have been extremely lucky then, mine have been grown in grow bags, in the greenhouse. Watered each night and watered once per week with tomatorite added (i.e. when I feed the tomatoes). I have separated them off so there's two to a grow bag rather than four that I had in one half of a grow bag. Other than that I've done nothing to them and they are going mad! I'll be having courgette with everything for the rest of the season!

The first flowers are male and do not provide any fruit so don't worry too much. I have never fed my courgettes i do occasionally water them if it is dry for any length of time, i never have any trouble with them.

 

I grow my courgettes on the allotment and I plant them through the weed membrane. I never water them once they start to produce the courgettes and reason for this is the weed membrane retains the moisture in the ground. It has never let me down yet.

 

You could try hand pollinating them. Apparently, if you remove the male flowers (the ones on stalks rather than the ones with mini courgettes behind them) and brush them against the female flowers it can help in fruit production, or you could use a small brush to transfer the pollen.

 

Still on the vine in the pic taken about 15 minutes ago, but Mr K has since cut it off and brought it in for lunch. I am going to make Shiney's Courgette Soup - yummy, we all love it.



It weighs 1163 gramme, so it was time to be picked.
