I am growing courgettes. Can anyone tell me if these have male and female flowers, and if so do I leave the male ones ?

    Thank you

I'm not an expert but I've grown courgettes for about three years now, have never removed any flowers and they've always had very generous crops. I know there are a few flowers which are on thin stalks which don't develop into courgettes which are probably the males so just leave them be & they'll do their job.

The males are needed to fertilize the females, no pollenation and the fruit will just rot from the flower end.
I think you can actually eat the male flowers fried in batter, but I'm no cook so maybe someone else can say yea or nay.

Yes you will have both male & female flowers on a courgette plant. I sometimes give mine a helping hand for the first few fruit to set, pick off a male flower and remove the petals then gently rub the stamen (the inside bit of the flower) in the female flower - you need to get the male flower at just the right time - its when the yellow pollen is easily visible and shakes off. If you have plenty of bees in your garden you won't need to bother doing this. There is no need to remove the males otherwise.

Thank goodness I joined this forum! I didn't have a clue about courgette flowers. I've got 3 courgettes plants coming through and I really hadn't thought any further about them. Really glad I've read this thread now. Thanks again.
