Covering existing lawn/weeds

Hi,

I have an area of lawn approximate 5' x 12' which is mostly weeds and very uneven. Is it best to rip up and put down a brand new layer of top soil or can I kill off the existing weeds etc and then cover with new topsoil, thus saving time and money?

Good evening Jacko and welcome to the site. Spray the area with glyphosate and kill it all off, then hire a rotorvator for the day and give the area a good seeing to. Then, rake it level, removing any stones and plant debris. Gently firm with a light roller or the back of a spade and either, re turf or re seed.
