    Hi

This grows in my neighbour's garden (no point asking him. he takes no interest in the garden which is reaching jungle like proportions!) and currently finding its way over the top of my fence and I've snipped a bit off it to try and grow one of my own!

I think it could be a crab apple as I remember seeing small fruit in the garden prior to having the fence put up a year or so ago. Anyone know?

    Thanks

    Chi

    It is Chaenomeles sp.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaenomeles

The common name is Japanese Quince.
( Not to be confused with the true Quince,Cydonia oblonga)

The fruits are like small apples. You can use them to make jams/ jellies.

It may well spread under the boundary fence and provide you with a source of fruits for making delicious, fragrant jellies and/or wines.

Even if it doesn't, just ask them for the Fruits, you can't eat them raw as they are too hard so most people just let them rot.

If you make Jam when they are slightly unripe it has a real sharp tang to it:dbgrtmb:

Oh, while you are on, thanks to your query about DOB, Richie has enabled the Birthday Alert Thinger for the new board:dbgrtmb:

All we need now is for someone to have a Birthday so we can find out where it is:snork:

    That sounds really good.
Hey that's good - nice to know that not paying attention can sometimes work out for the best.
Aww, if my birthday had been in May we wouldn't have had long to wait.:heehee:

Now theres a thought, we could give someone a birthday tomorrow just to test it.

Now who would get the most annoyed with that?:heehee:
