Scotkat - thats lovely. I only recently discovered the joy of these. I have also got 'Key Lime Pie' and 'Purple Palace'. The go very well planted together, and of course as evergreens (or is that everbrown!) they will give interest all year. I think they are reasonally tolerant of shade too. So they could brighten up a dark corner.

    Hello Scotcat

It's a beauty and no mistake!
Believe it or not I had one in my hand on Sat. but put it back on the stand.
It was £6.95, and the last one like it that I had, petered out in it's first winter with me, so no second chances!

I have 4 different purple/dark ruby ones and they are as hardy as old boots!
At the moment they all have lots of flower stems on, which today have been covered with bees!

Scotkat - I think they are ok to propagate. I am sure you have to do it by cuttings/division to keep the colours exactly the same. It produces curious 'roots' like an Iris. Actually the 'roots' (like Iris roots) are really stems, and the cutting you take is from this 'root'. You break off a bit of 'root' but it may need to be large enough, like an ordinary stem cutting to have a node below the ground from which genuine roots will form, and a node above ground from which the foliage will grow. I took some years ago, but forget the details. But there is a bit of discussion here http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/propa/msg0514094115555.html

I divide them in spring when the begin to make multiple "rosettes".

They are not really evergreen, I mean they keep the leaves in winter, but becomea sorry mess.

In the old garden I had several, now I have only a Velvet Night (beautiful dark purple) and a Ring of Fire (superb: marbled green with dark purple veins). The loveliet I ever had, which unfortunately died on me (too hot for them in the old garden) was Silver and Purple. The name is a perfect description.

I've also just discovered these. I've got fireworks which is a deep red. H choose it, I'm not too keen tbh. Also got creme brulee.
I had read that division is the best way to propagate and actually does the parent plant good as they get a bit leggy.
I am currently coveting cappuccino too.
Disappointing to hear they're not really evergreen :(

    Hi
Just caught up with this thread. Never heard of these but i do like them.

Scotkat, I love that last photo. what a glorious colour. Remember the water feature I've just got, same as yours but different colour? Well the stones we have chosen for this corner look the same as yours, too! Ours were from B & Q, called 'white spar'. spooky!

    cheers
