I have just succumbed to the local garden centre bargain bin of bulbs and aquired 2 for the price of 1 Fritillaria Imperialis Rubra bulbs at £2.49. I have planted them on their sides but as it is a bit late in the season have I wasted my money?

Were they begining to shoot Blackthorn?
If they were reasonably fresh looking I think you might be OK.
I planted one to flower last spring but it didn't, just leaves last year. hoping for flowers this year. So dont be dissappointed if you just get leaves they really do improve year after year.

Oh yes, I've heard that they smell of damp foxes! Thanks for your advice, they were still firm with roots so hopefully they will grow ok. I expect flowers maybe next year.

I have had lily beetle for the last few years. They have shredded my Fritillaria melleagris but don't touch the Imperialis
