3 of my 4 plants have keeled over!

Is it worth trying to grow them outside in the uk this time of year? I have put plastic round the bottom of them to keep them warm, but is this too little too late?

    I don't have a greenhouse. :-(

It's still a bit too cold Caz. I've some coming on indoors and won't even think about putting them into my greenhouse for another couple of weeks. Can you not try staking them in biggish pots and keeping them growing in the house for another week or so?
It's not too late to sow some more seed - you should still manage to get cucs.

I thinkI will re pot it inside for now, thanks for the advice.

How long would it take to get them ready for planting out if I planted more seed?

Difficult to give a precise answer Caz. I sowed seeds for cucs that I'll grow in a polytunnel about 3 weeks ago and I reckon I'll plant them out at the end of May. They are now about 3 inches tall in paper cups and I'll pot them on into 6 inch pots later this week.
BTW - If you are growing cucs outside the ridge variety seems to be a bit hardier.

Its not too late Caz. Cucs grow quickly, so if you started some indoors in pots now they would be ready to plant out towards the end of May, that would be about right for outdoor cucs.

Excellent, I'll do that. I don't ever really do anything from seed past this time of year, but maybe there is more I can plant at different times of year then I thought.

Caz, there are plenty of things to grow from seed still - runner/dwarf beans and courgettes/marrows you can start in pots about now, plus you can make succession direct sowings of carrots, radish, spinach & lettuce etc into rows in the soil right through the spring/summer.

I have lettuce growing very very well at the minute, as well as lots of rocket and watercress... I will try the beans and cucumbers, thanks.
