    Have grown cucumbers in past but this year plants from seed are still very small and seem ‘static’. I only grow two plants as all I need. One has a flower already. Should I remove this as the plant is so small and wonder if it puts too much effort into fruiting rather than growing. Any tips for helping it along. They are in greenhouse and they are in their final pot - quadgrow. Have I put them there too soon maybe?

    We sow in pots indoors and then when they have their true leaves planted them out into the soil in the polytunnel. They have been there now for about 3 weeks and for the first 2, they sulked. Now they are showing new growth but no flowers as still too small.

    What variety are they, cucumber vary fairly wildly regarding hardiness.
    It could be the compost if you are growing in peat free stuff.

      It’s mini munch variety. Yes grown in peat free compost. I sowed another couple recently so they’ve now got true leaves and nursing these along in case others don’t ‘behave’.

        Could possibly be that they got chilled, or over wet?

          Cucumbers are much more susceptible to cold than tomatoes. While it has been very very hot here during the day it has been going down to about 4 oC overnight. My cucumbers are planted in my unheated greenhouse but I have been covering them with layers of fleece overnight for the last 10 days and they are growing away well. Also agree with @pete, it is really easy to over water. I plant mine in a “ nest” of straw ( told this trick by a professional grower)so the drainage is super sharp when the plants are young.

            Several of my cucumber seedlings I had outside died, 5c already is too low for them I think. The ones on my windowsill though are booming.

            I have only just sown my cucumbers. As above, the night temperatures have been too low for them to be happy so far. My seeds are in individual small pots in a conservatory. They should ideally be indoors on a window sill. I would resow some more seed which I think you will find catch up and pass your original sowing, and be stronger growing.

              I'm about to sow cucumbers. I was successful with them only when we had a tropical-ish summer here (outside). Otherwise they die quickly with cold nights.

              Thanks all for advice. I had sown some more which are coming along okay so far so fingers crossed I can substitute if need be. I’m hoping as they’re in the quadgrow watering won’t be an issue!

                Mine are now putting on more growth since being planted into their final container some 3 or 4 weeks ago. This year just 2 Beth alphas in a large bottomless container part sunk into the GH bed. Altho they face south, they receive sufficient shade from my Passion fruit plant.
                @Kitty52 Hope your's continue to thrive :)

                @Kitty52 Did you remove the flower? Mine seem to be doing the same.

                Yes I’ve removed a few flowers to make sure the plant will grow a bit more and it is thriving better now. I am only growing two and one is better than the other!!? so fingers crossed it will catch up.
