Overwatering, Hammer, Also, when you water cucumbers, don`t go right up to the stem.:thumb:

One of my cucumbers has died too, so you aren't alone! I'm really upset as it had several 6" baby cucumbers on. I'm on tenterhooks waiting to see if the other 3 go the same way, but have changed the watering method as suggested by David, so hopefully that will help.

kathy your a copycat cucumber serial killer lol, got some more cucumbers and ive been told to cut the bottom off the pot i got them in and plant the pot in the tom pot and water around so no water hits the base of the stem.
    hope this helps.

Cucumbers are very prone to suddenly dying off when you get the bottom of the stem too wet. I usually try to make a little mound for them to grow on so that water runs away from the stem, but this does not always work and I quite often lose one out of four cucumbers I plant.

I do the same as JWK and it does help, the mound can be quite small and steep so that when you water around (away from the stem) the water is going to the roots and the stem is not left sitting in in the damp. I have lost some fairly reasonable sized plants in the past so you need to be careful almost up to the time when they start to flower.

You can SOMETIMES save a wilting cuc by earthing up round the base of the stem - it then puts out new roots. Doesn't always work, but if the rot hasn't gone too far you've a reasonable chance of success.

hi all hope everything growing ok, anyway back to the cucs ive done what ive been told cut bottom of the pot and placed them in a tom pot and watered around the pot, i put a bit in the pot but only on the edge, and everything ok so far well pleased with them.
i assume i have to stake the cucumbers as this is my first year with a greenhouse and i wish i had 2.
    good night all happy gardening.
