cucumber plants dying

    003.JPG noticed today I have lost 2 cucumber plants leaves wilting bottom of stems brown and roots have little white maggots on them how to I avoid this please 002.JPG 002.JPG

    Look a bit like vine weevil.
    Where are you growing them?
    Are they growing in fresh compost?

      in half a new grow bag with a plant pot set in to keep water off the stem

      Yes they do look like Vine Weevil at first glance, but they do look a bit different from the ones I have seen in the flesh or pictures like below.
      Yours do seem longer and darker coloured without the obvious tan head.

      Seems there are similar such bugs, partic in the US, but no idea what the adults are.

      You are in the UK ?

        Looking again, just wondering about the scale of the picture, and thinking they might be sciarid fly larvae.

        If so, the plants are too wet.

          Looking at the first picture it seems very wet to me, I think that is the major problem. Agree with Pete about being Sciarid fly larvae, they'll be thriving in the damp compost.
