    Help!
Each year when I grow cucumbers, the leaves, after a while, turn pale and crispy with a white mottled pattern. It looks like mildew, but I am not certain.
The plant still crops but not as well as at the beginning of the season.
Am I over or under watering?
How can I tell how much water to give the plants

Pauline, mine always do that as well, I've never really thought it affected the yield though. I don't think its anything to do with watering.

Thanks guys for your replies. I don`t feel too bad now, knowing you have the same problem. I guess I`ll just keep picking the cucumbers and not worry.
Wonder what it is that makes the plants go like that though.
    Cheers and thanks again

At a guess Red spider mite.

Look very closely on the reverse side of the leaf for minute insects, possibly some webbing as well, as the problem gets worse.

It could be mildew, but thats a white powder that tends to coat the leaves, and can be wiped off to some extent.

Pete I think mildew is probably the problem as there are no creepy crawlies anywhere. Can Mildew be prevented?

Plant resistant varieties. Control aphids and cucumber beetles. Rotate placement from year to year.
Satisfactory control can be achieved by reducing relative humidity in greenhouses, removing infected plant debris prior to crop establishment, and applying protectant fungicides.
Application of insecticide can drastically reduce leafhopper populations but is often ineffective in reducing the disease.
The best forms of control include using resistant cultivars, insecticides, reflective mulches, and mineral oils.
