Last year had 4 cucumber plants in greenhouse (first year). Absolutely overrun with cucumbers. This year stuck to just the 2 (well, sowed a few more and just kept what appeared to be the two strongest for potting on).

One seems to be doing OK. The other has been doing progressively worse until I think it is now completely dead. As far as I can tell I have been treating them the same. Any ideas?

Pictures here: (sorry I have probs uploading pics directly into the message)

That site appears to want me to sign in to see the pictures. Sorry but that ain't-gonna-happen!

Cucumbers wake up each morning and think of a new way to die :(

Keep the basal stem dry, arrange so that water runs away from the stem, do not allow to become waterlogged.

I would recommend, next year, that you grow 2 - 3 times as many as you actually need, and when they start over-running the joint, and NOT before, you "cull" the excess back to the number of plants you actually need.

sorry about the pictures. The site is supposed to allow me to make pictures available for public view without an account. I had it working before, so may have to tinker.

[EDIT] I think the link should work now.

One of my concerns is the possibility that the plant is diseased and, if so, whether it might spread to the healthy one. Obviously I have ditched the offending article by now, but it may be too late.

I can see the piccies Ok without signing in.

I'm afraid Kristen is right, cucumbers do seem to suddenly keel over and die with basal stem rot. Its a really tricky thing to get right - keep the water off the base of the plant, grow them on a slight mound of compost to keep them drier helps. But I do this and still lose 1 or 2 each year, so like Kristen always grwo a couple more than I need.

There was thread on here recently about double potting which people have had better results with:

Thanks for the heads up. I will check out the greenback, but I would just say that the colour balance in the photo is not really honest, especially since the camera decided to activate fill-out flash.
