I tried to grow cumcumbers last year in my greenhouse but the plants died they only grew to approx five to six inches someone told me i may have watered over the plant and roots instead of watering away from the plant.

I Would appriciate any help regarding this so that i can get it right this year.

Hi Golfer - don't know much about cucumbers I'm afraid, but would the edible gardening section be a better place to ask this? :D

    Hi Golfer.
Cucs are easily killed by overwatering.
I grow the indoor ones in pots sitting in trays. I water by topping up the trays and feed by pouring the liquid feed onto the top of the pot.
Its also a good idea whan using pots to start with a bit of free space at the top of the pot which you can top up with compost every so often. This allows the plant to grow more roots in slightly drier soil.

Also, once the plants get to a fair size and are fruiting, the atmosphere must be kept moist. Just watering alone is not always enough and on very hot summer days spraying the leaves regularly and damping down the greenhouse floor several times a day may be necessary! Some shade would help I suppose?

    Anyway something to consider later!

    Hi Golfer,
I start my cucmbers off in 3" pots in gentle heat, when they have emerged i put the pots onto some sponge matting and water the matting.
when they have reached the potting on stage, I put 3ltr pots with the bottom cut off into a growbag, or 10ltr pot so that the 3ltr pot has been covered by half, and then plant the cucumber seedling into the half covered 3 ltr pot.
and water between the 3 & 10 ltr pot or growbag so you will never wet the bottom of the stem.
I use the same principle for Tomato's and Peppers
