    New year, new thread.

There was some great stuff on BBC Four over Christmas. One program showed this performance of Horses by Patti Smith on The Old Grey Whistle Test way back in the seventies. I've had the album on almost constantly in the car this year...............

There was also a documentary on Kate Bush. It's hard to top this.................

Last night I found a new recording by early eighties sensations A Flock Of Seagulls of one of their classics. Space Age Love Song recorded with the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra................

They could have been massive but sadly they pressed the self destruct button instead.

This Mortal Coil were a 'supergroup' formed by Ivo Watts Russell who was the founder of the 4AD record label. It had a constantly changing line-up of members all of whom were signed to 4AD.
Modern English played Sixteen Days and Gathering Dust as a medley in their live shows and Watts Russell asked them to re-record it like that. They declined but suggested that he put a Mortal Coil line-up in the studio to do it instead..............

This Mortal Coil also did a cover version of Tim Buckleys Song To The Siren................

Quite possibly the definitive version of this track :blue thumb:

I love it when groups meld with orchestras so ethereal.

It can go two ways - epic or disasterous!
As a yoof listening to the original it would never have occured to me that one day it would have an orchestral backing..............

Appreciate that. My favourites are The Scorpions ...

... and of course the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, now TSO East and TSO West who carry their own orchestrial crew around with them.

A masterclass in how to close a live show. It's ten minutes long but worth a watch if you enjoy great musicianship.....................

Even better when you're actually there though!

I'm not a big fan of The Walkmen as they're too folky for my tastes but this is far from being folky...................

                              Absolute classic!

Talking of classics, the track Ceremony by Joy Division was for many years the holy grail amongst fans of Joy Division. There was only one known recording of it which was just a rough demo which was recorded three or four days before its writer Ian Curtis commited suicide. Then about ten years ago it actually popped up on You Tube...................

The three remaining members of Joy Division recruited Gillian Gilbert and became New Order. Their first release was a very faithful version of Ceremony..............
