I'm refreshing a border and having removed some large plants it has exposed the side of my Amelanchier tree which has developed a few more stems over the years but is looking rather bare and due to the plants that surrounded it, it hasn't grown into a particularly nice shape.

Could I cut it down to a couple of foot above ground for it to regrow with more stems? Or perhaps cut some of them down and then the rest another year? I'm pretty sure you can buy multi-stem Amelanchier but are they a different variety?

If you thin out about 1/3 of the oldest stems every few years (cut right back to the ground) then new stems will appear.
That way you can keep it fresh.
You can prune them back too - they are tough shrubs.
