Hi all, I've had a really good show with my herb containers that I planted. Sage, parsley, rosemary, oregano and thyme. They are all a good size but being tall they are flopping with the least bit of wind or rain. Can these herbs be cut down a bit or will they object and sulk, or at worst die ??

Chop them all as you need to, but with a couple of things to keep in mind.

Sage is fairly slow growing, so cut it too much and it will look a bit sparse for a while.

Parsley is biennial, and will benefit from being prevented from flowering, by regular haircuts.

Rosemary and Thyme (and I think Oregano too but not 100% sure) will not generate new growth from bare wood, so don't cut below the bottom few leaves on each stem.

But in any case, they are all strong enough to stand up unaided, so I'm not sure why they'd flop about, unless they were raised in warm sheltered (indoor) conditions and then put outside recently and haven't strengthened up yet.

Thanks clueless, useful advise :) It is pouring with rain at the moment and when it is over the herbs will be drooping quite a bit. Okay, a bit of sun will perk them up again but hey, we ain't got no sun on the horizon :frown:
I'll probably trim the sage and put the trims in the fridge. I'll keep an eye out for parsley flowers. Rosemary and thyme will get the closest of haircuts.
      thanks again,
