My olive standard ( girth @8cm, height @170cm) has grown through its plastic pot and through the broken path edge and into the ground. Would it be possible to prune/cut the roots without harming the little tree,? ( in order to release and relocate it to somewhere less shady)

The plastic pot is about 30litres and not flimsy.

Would be grateful for any thoughts from experienced gardeners. Thankyou.

Better to cut the pot, but that's not possible you're not left with much choice. I'm reasonably confident the tree will be fine with some TLC

Thankyou @Loofah . Would you say it would be best to try to cut the minimum amount of roots, and would you be inclined to wait until spring or some other time?

It's always better to damage roots as little as possible. I should think moving it now while theres still a while before winter sets in would be ok.
