Hi, I've been trying to grow this climbing rose up and over our pergola, but was wondering if I need to cut it right back now? I'm still new with roses, and did have a thread saved on the old gardening world forums which I now can't view IMG_20241026_112135.jpg

Hi @DaveyB , no, don't cut it back yet, if at all. Climbing roses are treated differently to other forms of roses in that you need to retain all the long climbing canes and tie them in as horizontally at possible. In the winter (Jan/Feb) you can reduce the shorter branches coming off the long ones by about a third, these will then produce most of the flowers next year.

I suggest you get up a ladder now, if able to, and gently tie those long branches down to the cross pieces of the pergola, spreading them out if you can along the wooden cross bars. This will stop them from being broken in any forthcoming storms.

Hope this helps. I expect other posters will also help with advice.
