My brother told me willow cuttings will root if you keep them in water, but mine didn't, he told me it was only certain species that you could do that with but he didn't know what his was (doh!) - anyone know?

Also I have some wheat with tiny bits of short root on, can anyone tell me how to get it going?

Two varieties that will root freely in water are weeping willow and twisted willow. My neighbour and I both have nice little twisted willow trees grown from twigs in bouquets of flowers, and I have several bits of weeping willow rooting up nicely in my pond to try a bonsai one.
I would think that any willow growing on its' own stock would oblige, not so sure about grafted bits. They don't take long so it's always worth a try!
Have you seen the living arbors etc grown from pollarded willow sticks? [I think hazel works too].
