I have a number of very sterdy plastic/polypropaline bags which I use for growing new potatoes partly in the greenhouse. These are about to be transfered from the greenhouse to the great outdoors to be replaced with Peppers and Tomatoes which are usualy grown in growbags.
As I still have lots of these bags left (not the ones that had potatoes in) it seems a good ides to make my own growbags.
Can anyone recomend a good mix into which I would incorperate Perlite and sharp sand?
    thanks in hope

I dunno oldwinegum.I know some folk who plant(final position-buckets) there toms in nothing but manure, but the book says that, yes they like a small amount of compost or manure and peat but to prepare this in the winter.I think they also need magnesium and calcium which you get from liquid fertilizer,so,sorry, but i wouldn`t like to guess at quantities.Someone will though. [IMG]

I grow toms in 12" pots as they are easier to move about individualy but I know someone who grew spuds and toms in rubble sacks last year(cheapo Pound Shop ones).

I use 1/3 loamy soil, 1/3 home made compost and 1/3 peat substitute. Everything goes through a 6mm sieve and is thoroughly mixed. Soil and home compost contains a healthy balance of all the microbes require so should NOT be sterilised. If the loam is clayey with no grit then add a few handfull of sharp grit to each pot, crushed granite is ideal and will add lots of minor minerals. Use liquid feed as per instructions.

Let's face it. Many commercial toms are grown hyrdoponically (taste awfull but that's another topic :D ) so the plants can be made to thrive in just about anything as long as they are fed

Im an absolute addict to home grown toms especially tom thumbs
The supermarket ones are totally tasteless.
If I cant eat my own I dont bother buying them any more.
